The Children’s Scrapstore is a children’s charity located on Sevier Street in St Werburghs, Bristol. An art and craft shop called Artrageous is also part of the Scrapstore initiative and can be found in the same building.
The Children’s Scrapstore collects business waste that is safe to be re-used and then offers it to groups supporting or delivering services to children for a small donation. The Scrapstore is passionate about helping children’s groups deliver cost-effective and abundant resources to children. They are also passionate about art and crafts, outdoor and indoor play and bringing more play and creativity into the home, school and other play contexts.
To purchase creative resources from the Scrapstore, you have to be a member. Membership is open to groups working in creative play, care, educational or therapeutic settings. Although they are called ‘Children’s Scrapstore’ they actually offer membership to groups working with all age groups. To find out more about who can become a Children’s Scrapstore member (plus membership fees and benefits) see their website: http://www.childrensscrapstore.co.uk.
Unlike the Scrapstore, the Artrageous art and craft shop is open to everyone, not just Children’s Scrapstore members (although members do get a 20% discount in Artrageous). All profits made from Artrageous go straight back into Scrapstore. This helps the charity maintain and develop their work in helping groups on low incomes access valuable supplies.
Artrageous run Art and Craft sessions every other Saturday (between 11 am and 1pm). These sessions give adults and children the chance to experiment with the products sold in the Artrageous shop. Each session has a different theme, with lots of different craft ideas. Visit the website to find out more.
The Children’s Scrapstore also run the Scrapstore PlayPod Project, which delivers scrap materials into primary schools for use at lunchtimes. This project has been so successful that it is now being delivered across the country and grows each year to include some 20,000 children at the end of 2012.
