Many of the fantastic creative people in Bristol share their passion for their art with others by teaching workshops and classes. Sophie Rae is one of those people. She is a talented illustrator and printmaker who runs workshops and courses in locations across Bristol and the South West.
Sophie studied for a BA (Hons) in Illustration from The Arts University Bournemouth between 2008 and 2011. She then moved to Bristol and has since produced a steady stream of striking and original work, including commissions for a range of clients and personal work for exhibitions and art fairs.
Sophie has developed her own unique way of printmaking. After sketching out her designs, she carefully cuts them into stencils. She mixes her oil-based inks to create beautiful colours. The stencils are placed onto paper and a roller is used to apply the ink through the gaps, gradually building up layers of shapes until the image is complete.
Often inspired by the natural landscape, Sophie loves to travel. On her recent trip to India she was inspired to create a number of bright and colourful prints during her time as Artist in Residence at Chhaap Printmaking Studios in Gujurat.
Sophie is also part of a collective called Drawn in Bristol, a group that supports and profiles Bristol based illustrators. She shares a studio space in Hamilton House with many of the members.
Sophie’s workshops teach people to hand-print on a whole range of surfaces including greetings cards or bookmarks, gift tags, wedding favour boxes/bags, bunting, and more, using her own special method of printing. The effects produced are a little like screen prints but with much more depth and interest. These workshops are suitable for both adults and children.
Sophie is a also member of The Art Troupe, a group of Bristol based artists and other creatives that offer a wide range of entertaining workshops to you, your friends, family or colleagues. Operating in the South West of England, The Art Troupe is mobile and can organise a venue in a location that is convenient for you. Workshops can take place at festivals, birthday parties, hen parties, children’s parties, schools, corporate team building events or a little get together with friends. The Art Troupe include professional mask and puppet makers, jewellery designers, print makers, illustrators and paper artists, fantastical hula hoopers, an astrologer and many more.
